FETCH

Bentwood Forest

F etch stood on the top of a ridge overlooking Bentwood Forest. The forest filled the entirety of the valley between two towering mountains, sprawling as far as the eye could see. Far to the west, the mountain range faded into the horizon. Fetch knew from experience that this forest was as deadly as it was vast.

The westerly breeze carried the scents of the forest right into Fetch’s breathing apparatus. His filter did a poor job of blocking even the faintest smells. The damp earth and decaying leaves were pungent to his nose. This was okay with Fetch: He needed all his senses. If something was downwind, he would know; if the clan tried to ambush him, he would be prepared.

The sun setting over the mountains to the west cast a crimson hue on everything it touched: Bentwood’s treetops caught the days’ last light.

In the center of the forest was a shallow lake. Extending his scope, Fetch scanned the area for predators and found a large flock of mbuni. ‘What a strange creature,’ Fetch thought as he studied the flock of birds; their long, naked legs and necks combined with their solid, round, feathered bodies prevented them from being able to fly. What bird couldn’t fly? Fetch shook his head. It was of no concern to him.

Scanning further, he saw a small pack of hiena (hyena? Or was this intentional?) being chased by a giant sloth which was most likely chasing them off out of anger. Flying high above the chase was a troop of perytons who were swooping and diving at the pack of hiena, as if they were in cahoots with the giant sloth. Perytons were very large and very smart; Fetch knew all too well that an angry peryton could do some damage.

Stashing his scope, Fetch let out a long huff and turned down the dial on his breathing apparatus. The damn thing had been acting up and was now buzzing so loudly that it hurt his ears. ‘Bloody wind and dust of the plains,’ he thought to himself. His breathing apparatus was not made to function in such a place. The wind sliced through its small holes, making a constant, high-pitched whistling sound.

As much as he liked being on the mainland, there were drawbacks, especially this time. He should have found the boy already. This was turning into a wild mammoth chase of epic proportions. When he caught up to the tribe that was harboring the boy, he planned to make them pay for his troubles.

It wasn’t hard for Fetch to see where the tribe had traveled: They had stopped at the lake before heading deeper into the forest.

“We end this now,” Fetch huffed as he started once again after the tribe.
